Highland emphasizing leadership and energy in early-season stretch

0Comments

The Highland Trojans girls basketball team is continuing its 2025–26 campaign with a focus on leadership, chemistry, and consistency following last year’s regional championship and semi-state run.

According to head coach Eric Kundich, who is in his second year with the program, this year’s group is learning to fill leadership roles while maintaining the intensity that defined their postseason success. Highland will host Kankakee Valley on Tuesday, November 19, at 7 p.m. inside Highland High School for its third game of the season. Kundich said that the Trojans’ focus has been on turning last year’s late-game struggles into motivation. “Those close losses gave our younger players experience,” he said. “Now it’s about consistency — playing with energy and valuing every possession.”

Addyson Figueroa expressed that she is working to become more vocal after the team graduated several senior leaders. “I’m naturally a leader, so I’m taking it day by day and keeping everyone focused in practice,” she said. Avery Steele mentioned that she is focused on being more aggressive. “I want to use my voice more and take the shots I used to pass up. We’ve all worked on being confident and playing together.”

Highland’s next game will be against NorthWood on Saturday, November 22, at 11 a.m.
