In a tightly contested nonconference match Thursday, Highland High School’s varsity girls soccer team came close to victory but ultimately fell 4–3 at home to Victory Christian Academy. The score remained level at 0–0 through a physical first half before a flurry of second-half goals tipped the balance in favor of the visitors.
Highland’s offense was sparked by standout performances from juniors Madelyn Gora, who scored twice, and sophomore Kayla Pepelea, who added another. Both players demonstrated clinical finishing in the attacking third, combining for all three of Highland’s tallies and keeping the Trojans in striking distance until the final whistle.
Despite the scoring output, Highland’s defense struggled to contain Victory Christian’s potent three-pronged attack, which broke through for four goals in the second half. Defensive lapses in transition proved costly, as the Lions capitalized on space and moved the ball quickly to create chances.
The narrow defeat dropped Highland to 1–1 on the season but also underscored the team’s ability to compete in high-pressure moments. With improved defensive consistency, the Trojans believe they can turn close battles into wins.
