Cash Washick enters the season believing Highland baseball has the experience and motivation to take the next step after last year’s sectional championship.
“Sectional was ours last year,” Washick said. “We weren’t in favor to win, but we came out and took it. Now it’s about moving on to the next step.”
Washick, a senior leader on the roster, said the team’s approach centers on consistency and competition within the program.
“It’s day by day,” he said. “You’ve got practice tomorrow, then game day. There are nine other guys trying to take what’s yours, so you’ve got to earn it every time.”
After graduating key pitchers, Highland will depend heavily on younger players to step into prominent roles.
“We lost a lot of innings, so the younger guys are going to be huge,” Washick said. “If they grow up fast, we’ll win a lot of games.”
Washick added that last season’s success proved the program can compete with anyone when playing at its best.
“We know what it takes now,” he said. “Getting past that hurdle showed we can compete with anybody.”
With a mix of veterans and emerging talent, Washick believes Highland has the mindset needed to contend again this spring.
