The Highland Trojans are relying on young linemen to support their 2025 campaign. Head coach Ben Geffert confirmed that three sophomores will start on the offensive line, emphasizing the importance of leadership from veteran players.
“These younger guys know they’re expected to play and perform right away,” Geffert said. “That expectation has been set by leaders like Justin and Jake Slaven, who have shown what it means to step up early.”
According to Geffert, this strategy has instilled confidence in Highland as they balance development with production. He mentioned that the team’s dedication in the weight room has prepared them for varsity-level contact.
“We’ve seen so much growth,” Geffert said. “Their bodies are responding, and their execution in practice shows it.”
Wide receiver and safety Justin Slaven expressed that his goals extend beyond personal statistics. “I want more catches, more touchdowns, but also more wins and better teamwork,” he said. His brother, quarterback Jake Slaven, shared a similar view. “It’s about scoring and getting everyone more involved,” Jake remarked.
With young players already contributing, Highland believes they are laying the foundation for future seasons this fall.
